Chicago has recently enjoyed a creative musical run, with a number of young artists championing a number of different sounds. Among the Second City’s underground movements are the Hozac label’s stable of garage rock bands, Gatekeeper and White Car’s industrial synth-pop, How to Dress Well’s lo-fi R&B gospels, and Cave’s bar-friendly drones. Now Moritat — the trio of Venus Laurel, Konstantin Jace, and Corey McCafferty — are capturing the diversity of these Windy City scenes in genre-bending flickers of melancholic pop. “We’re influenced by the sounds and rhythms of our metropolis,” they say, and their lo-fi cut “Cats” draws inspiration from all of Chicago’s sounds at once. With scattered guitar pangs, jazzy percussion, slinky keyboards, and lofty bass riffs, the track has a hazy and dim-lit feel, which is fitting, since the band says “Cats” was written about a girl obsessed with her shadow. But judging by this experimental ballad, Moritat aren’t living in anyone else’s.

Since time immemorial Rappers have been releasing mix tapes to keep their hungry fans satiated. Now it appears that Chicago indie rockers Moritat have taken Trap-a-Holics' example to heart; they recently dropped off free CD copies of their new Don Popsicle Mix Tape at a bevy of local record stores and cafes. They tell Gossip Wolf that the mix is "basically a pre-empting" of an upcoming full-length they're working on with Brian Deck at Engine Studios. Sweet! Moritat will give away a second mix tape Fri 12/9 when they open for Brooklyn noise punks Pterodactyl at the Empty Bottle.
